Oral semaglutide: a new option for diabetes treatment
Share
Oral semaglutide is a new drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It belongs to the class of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. The following is an introduction to its basic information, mechanism of action, efficacy, safety, etc.:
- Basic information : Semaglutide was originally used in the form of injections to treat diabetes and obesity. Oral semaglutide is a formulation of semaglutide that can be taken orally, which greatly improves the convenience and compliance of patients. Patients do not need frequent injections, making it easier to adhere to long-term treatment.
- Mechanism of action : After oral administration, semaglutide can specifically bind to the GLP-1 receptor. On the one hand, it stimulates pancreatic β cells to secrete insulin, which can promote the cell's uptake and utilization of glucose, thereby lowering blood sugar levels; on the other hand, it can inhibit pancreatic α cells from secreting glucagon, reduce liver glycogen output, and further lower blood sugar. In addition, it can delay gastric emptying, increase satiety, reduce food intake, and help control weight.
- Efficacy : Clinical studies have shown that oral semaglutide can effectively reduce the level of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in patients with type 2 diabetes and can also help patients lose weight. Compared with other hypoglycemic drugs, it has more outstanding performance in blood sugar control and weight management.
- Safety and adverse reactions : Common adverse reactions include gastrointestinal discomfort, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc. These symptoms will gradually alleviate in most patients as the treatment time increases. However, it should also be noted that people who are allergic to semaglutide or its excipients are prohibited from using it. People with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) and patients with multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN2) are prohibited from using it.
- Precautions for taking medicine : To improve the absorption rate of the drug, oral semaglutide should be taken at least 30 minutes before the first meal of the day with no more than 120 ml of water. Avoid eating, drinking and lying down within 30 minutes after taking the medicine. And the whole tablet should be swallowed, and it should not be broken, crushed or chewed. During use, patients need to monitor blood sugar regularly and adjust the dosage under the guidance of a doctor.
