🦞 Gout: A "disease of kings" brought on by diet, with pain so bad it's like a dog biting your toe and refusing to let go!

🤔 Gout: Simply put, it's like "salt crystals forming in your joints."

Imagine this scenario: You're in the middle of a beautiful dream when suddenly, it feels like a tiny demon is clamping down hard on your big toe with pliers, while a mad dog ferociously bites at it... The pain jolts you out of bed, covered in cold sweat!

Congratulations, it's highly likely that "gout" has come knocking! 🎉

Gout, medically known as "crystalline arthritis caused by hyperuricemia," can be understood by the common person with one simple phrase: too much uric acid in the body, which can't be excreted, so it "crystallizes" in the joints, stabbing your flesh like tiny blades.

Typical symptoms (please check if these apply to you):

● Red, swollen, hot, and painful big toe, so painful you can't even bear the weight of a blanket.

● Ankles, knees, and wrists are also susceptible to attacks at any time.

● Usually strikes suddenly in the middle of the night, making you want to chop off your foot.

🦐 The culprit is the bad guy called "purine."

It all starts with "purines." Purines are substances in the human body that produce uric acid after metabolism. Too much uric acid, and the kidneys can't keep up, leading to its accumulation in the joints, causing damage.

Two main sources of purines:

1.  Produced by the body itself (accounts for 80%): genetics, obesity, strenuous exercise, etc.

2.  Ingested through food (accounts for 20%): high-purine foods are the "major culprits."

Blacklist of high-purine foods (foodies, proceed with caution):

● 🦞 Seafood: Shellfish, shrimp, crab, sardines ("number one killer" for gout patients)

● 🥩 Animal organs: Liver, kidney, heart, brain (purine bombs)

● 🍲 Rich meat broths, hot pot broths: The longer they boil, the higher the purine content.

● 🍺 Beer: Simply a "gout catalyst."

● Sugary drinks: Fructose also raises uric acid levels.

⚡ The "three acts" of gout: From one painful episode to body-wide damage.

Many people don't take it seriously: "It's just one painful episode, I'll just endure it and it'll pass."

Completely wrong! Gout is like "boiling a frog slowly":

Act One: Acute attack phase 🔥

Suddenly excruciating pain, then a few days on painkillers and you feel better, so you forget the pain.

Act Two: Intercritical period 😴

The pain is gone, you think you're cured, but uric acid is still quietly accumulating.

Act Three: Chronic tophaceous gout 💎

"Stones" (tophi) grow in the joints, leading to joint deformity, ulceration with chalky discharge, and kidney damage. At this stage, even a god would struggle to save you!

💊 Treatment: Remember the "two-step" strategy.

Step One: "Firefighting" during the acute phase 🧯

● Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, naproxen)

● Colchicine (the earlier it's taken, the better the effect)

● Corticosteroids (used when other medications are ineffective)

Step Two: "Lowering uric acid" during the remission phase 🎯

● Allopurinol, febuxostat: inhibit uric acid production

● Benzbromarone: promote uric acid excretion

● Goal: control uric acid below 360 μmol/L (below 300 for those with tophi)

🛡️ Prevention: Control your diet, exercise, and drink plenty of water.

Here's a three-word mantra for you:

● Control your diet: Eat less seafood and organ meats, drink less beer and sugary beverages.

● Exercise: Moderate exercise, control weight (avoid strenuous exercise, which can induce gout).

● Drink plenty of water: More than 2000ml daily, to promote urination and uric acid excretion.

● Regular check-ups: Check uric acid and kidney function regularly, don't wait until the pain starts.

🌈 A frank word

Gout is not terrible; what's terrible is to forget the pain once the wound has healed.

As long as you take medication scientifically and control your diet, you can live a normal life and occasionally indulge in delicious food (occasionally). But if you neglect it, by the time your joints are full of "stones," it will be too late for tears! 😭

High uric acid isn't a terminal illness, but the pain can be deadly! 💊💪
